The Influence Of The Ancient Chinese Concept Of "Appropriate" Creation Enlightenment On Modern Packaging Design

The ancient Chinese traditional creation culture is the concentration of the working people in the long-term social practice, is the crystallization of wisdom by ancestors, is the highly unified harmonious beauty of reason and emotion. In the concept of traditional Chinese creation, great thinkers have different views to the "appropriate" creation from different perspectives, this paper argues that adapts to the law of nature’s development, pays more attention to the harmony of design and form, selects materials in right ways, and treats nature kindly. For example, Lao-tzu proposed "Great art conceals itself with natural conception. The "great" art realized the harmonious development relationship of man and nature; Confucius advocated " the combination of content and form", and contained two aspects of content and form, only these two aspects reminded harmonious and unified, things can developed evenly; Mo-tse pursued "finished device and not decorate " with functionalism, and emphasized on the use of creation; the idea of being the right place at the right time with the right people according to Artificers’ Record, consists of the design concept of "appropriate for nature". These concepts of creation influenced a lot on the formation, development and practice of "appropriate".In Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the "appropriate" means proper, appropriate, modest. This paper is to study the ancient core concept of "appropriate" creation, and these ideas still has positive influence on modern packaging design. The core concept of the ancient Chinese "appropriate" creation included "the combination of content and form", "appropriate for nature", and "people-oriented". This article attempts to explore the enlightenment of creation of "appropriate" to modern packaging design from three aspects, with "the combination of content and form" to explain the harmonious unity relations between the function of the packaging and the form of decoration; "appropriate for nature" to interpret the relationship between materials and science and technology in the modern packaging design, and design trends at present; "people-oriented" to interpret the design concept concerned the needs of people (humanized design)in the contemporary packing design.From a certain point, the "appropriate" creation is the reflection of different thoughts in different times, is the epitome of the ancient craftsman in social practice, is an important reference. To understand, research, respect and combine to the characteristics of today’s society, draw reasonable reference from the core idea of creation view in modern packaging design, and implement the harmony and unity between design, environment, society, is the responsibility and pursuit of each design workers. To achieve this goal, we should put the core concept of "appropriate" creation into the practice of packaging design, and become a self-conscious behavior. Only in this way, will the vitality of "appropriate" creation have broad prospects, and the modern packaging design will be a benign development, this is also the purpose this research project express. Because of extremely rich content of the ancient Chinese concept of "appropriate" creation, both the east and the west draw its wisdom. Not a word on the study can explain detailed, but it is a long process. In this paper, the author studies just only a limited view, and hope it will play the role of introduction.
