Marine side thruster is a new type of auxiliary maneuver device which produced with the development of modern ship technology. It can effectively improve the ship’s maneuverability by using side thruster when the ship running at a low speed in the harbor or in limited water area. Combined with the research and development project of marine engine room simulator and marine crew intelligent examination system, a typical real ship is adapted as research object, the mathematical modeling and dynamic simulation of side thruster control system are studied in this paper. The main research works are included as follows:Firstly, according to MMG modeling theory, on the basis of hydrodynamic performance analysis of the hull, propeller and rudder separately, and the hydrodynamic interactions among them, a three degrees of freedom ship motion mathematical model is established. Then considering of the effect of thruster force and moment, and combining the features of shallow water and low speed in the harbor, the mathematical model for ship maneuvering motion with side thruster is finally proposed. The ship maneuvering equations are solved using 4-order Runge-Kutta method, and the ship maneuvering simulation researches are carried out. The maneuvering efficiency of the side thruster in different operating conditions is analyzed in this thesis.Secondly, on the basis of research above, taking bow thruster control system of "COSCO OCEANIA" 10000 TEU container ship as the study object, and making a detailed analysis of the work principle and basic functions for thruster control system, the whole design scheme of the simulation software is proposed. The simulation software for side thruster control system is designed and developed with VC++, the simulation system includes four parts, such as local control, bridge control, wing control and electro-hydraulic system.Finally, based on DMS-2014 simulation platform of marine engine room simulator, dynamic visual operation of simulation software is realized. Simulation results show that the simulation software has good visual human-computer interaction function, can realistically simulate the maneuvering and control of marine side thruster, and realize the functions of typical fault setting and analysis, the simulation software meets the demands of visual teaching and training.
