In view of the objective conditions that the high altitude region and multi snow weather of Qinghai Haixi, the correct selection of insulators is becoming particularly important for power transmission line, an economical, safe and reliable insulator selection program has become particularly urgent. As an important part of the transmission line, insulators have the effect of electrical isolation and mechanical solid lines. However, the insulators are easily affected by the environment because of operation outdoor all the year round. The flashover of insulators caused by ice-coverd and snow-covered phenomenon have been an important factor affecting the stability of power system. For the high altitudes ice-snow environment of Golmud,we need to do systematic research under the condition of high altitude, wind, ice and snow.In this paper, the potential distribution and the electric field strength of insulator surface in high altitude snow environment are analyzed through the ANSYS finite element simulation. The snow state can divide into dry snow, snow and ice mixture, ice three states with the changes of temperature, all states of snow were analyzed to explore the ice cover, snow cover affect the electrical properties of the insulator, and the laboratory and field tests were used to verify the theoretical simulation results. The structure of insulator sheds, umbrella diameter and umbrella spacing parameters were optimized on the basis of theoretical research, a insulator model was recommended for high altitude operation under snow weather conditions, and the insulator parameters which most suitable for the area in Qinghai Haixi were designed. The research will provide a scientific basis for the insulators selection in high-altitude snow weather conditions...
