With the progress of the construction of electric power informatization and improvement of the level of power dispatching automation, especially the promotion of the smart grid,electric power communication business is gradually diversified. Data, video and multimedia services grow rapidly,towards ALL IP. The existing power communication transmission technology is mainly based on the SDH/MSTP, which provides a rigid pipeline based on circuit switching, while the IP business will gradually show the problem of low carrying efficiency, limited flexibility and high cost of transmission per bit. Therefore, the emergence of PTN technology just meets the new demand of the development of electric power communication network.This paper briefly introduced the development of PTN technology, the principle and the key technology. Through the network, planning, and business bearing testing process, we actively explored and validated the feasibility and the value of PTN technology in network of electric power system, analyzed the reliability of transmission performance and protection of power communication services in the PTN network to the reality. We have made full use of PTN technology to solve the problems during the development of power carrying communications business, and explored that PTN technology to be the independent innovation points for the electric power communication service, and made the smart grid communication and informatization construction improve to a new level,accumulating valuable experience for subsequent network application.
