In recent years, with the rapid development of wind power generation in our country., a lot of large and centralized wind farms have been built. Since most of the large scale wind farms far from load centers, EHV/UHV transmission is usually adopted. The wind power generation has intermittent and volatility, and these have made difficulties in reactive power and voltage control of wind power delivery system. An important measure to solve this problem is installing magnetically controlled shunt reactors(MCR) to wind power transmission lines. On the basis of a project of large scaled wind power penetration into grid, the following work has been done.First, this paper introduced wind power development situation both at home and abroad, and analysed of the reactive voltage characteristics in wind power delivery area. A method of reactive power compensation which applied to wind power delivery area was proposed. Then, the structure characteristics, operating principle and characteristics of MCR were introduced. The feasibility of MCR used in transmission line in such area was proved through BPA simulation. Finally, the system’s simulation model was built by using PSCAD simulation software. By comparing the control effect to the reactive voltage before and after the access of MCR, the effect of inhibition of the power-frequency overvoltage in wind power transmission area of MCR was explained. The feasibility of MCR used in such area was proved.
