Transmission lines icing is a widespread natural phenomenon. In recent years, the power transmission and transformation equipments are seriously suffered destruction by ice disaster, especially the ice disaster in 2008, which caused large area transmission lines tripped and toweres collapsed in many provinces in China, that seriously affacted the traffic transportation, people’s life and power supply reliability. It has been a social problem that people concern about how to improve the anti-icing ability of the power grid, and scientific researches need to be urgently carried out to draw up effective measures for preventing the icing damage.This paper studies the typical types of disasters caused by transmission line icing, and analyzes the theoretical of icing disaster mechanism. After that, the anti-icing countermeasures of transmission line in heavily icing area are proposed based on the transmission line corridor optimization, tower positioning, electrical insulation, tower planning and tower structure optimization. At last, several commonly technology principles and measures of anti-icing are detailly investigated, especially for the measures to solve the Icing flashover and the ongitudinal unbalanced tension,and these researching results are instructive for improving the anti-icing ability of transmission line in heavily icing area.
