With the enlargement of the distribution network and the increase of nonlinear loads, the harmonic of ground fault current enhances greatly, which has an adverse impact on the arc extinguishing. On the other hand the leakage resistance of power equipment contributes a small number of active current to the grounding current. However the traditional arc suppression coil is not able to compensate the harmonic and active components.This thesis firstly puts forword using the cascade STATCOM as full compensation arc suppression device. When the system is running normally, STATCOM can run in the state of reactive power compensation; when single-phase to earth fault occurs, device operates in arc suppression mode by compensating the whole active and reactive power, harmonic current accordingly.This thesis proposes a new method to calculate the the grouding current. Based on the complex sequence network of single phase ground fault, this thesis extracts negative sequence component of fault phase using symmetrical components method, then the grouding current can be determined, the simulations in PSCAD verify its feasibility. On the basis of feasibility, this thesis puts forward the instantaneous symmetrical component method to calculate the negative sequence fundamental component; based on the principle of symmetrical component method, the detection method of harmonic current is studied. After the measurement of grounding current, this thesis studies the calculation method of the value of the output instruction current of the arc suppression device.This thesis analyses the direct current control strategy of cascade STATCOM as an arc suppression device, including the DC bus voltage stability control. Finally the simulation is carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC, verifing the compensation effect as an arc suppression device.
