With the development of science and technology, the application of the load in the power system has undergone tremendous changes, but also brought serious power quality problems. Therefore, improving power quality has become one of the problems to be solved in the field of modern electric power, the harmonic control and reactive power compensation have been regarded as the main purposes to improve power quality. Active power filter (APF) and static var compensator (SVC) can be used as typical representatives in the harmonic control and reactive power compensation fields, they are irreplaceable. The combination of the two can suppress the harmonic and improve the power factor, which makes up for the shortcomings of each other, but also reduces the cost, improves the quality of electric energy.First of all, a brief exposition of harmonic control and reactive power compensation comprehensive research status and background will be introduced in this article.Secondly, discuss the power filter classification and work principles. By analyzing the three-phase three-wire shunt APF, the harmonic detection method and control methods & parameters of active power filter are studied, the design method of the main circuit parameter is also studied, the research on harmonic detection and control methods of APF is described. Because APF has a wide range of current control methods, the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is described, and SVPWM control scheme is used as the tracking command current signal in the current loop.Then, introduce the (SVC) static var compensator’s working principles, connection mode and control mode.Finally, the simulation models of APF and SVC are built, also the simulation models of the detection methods and control methods are built. Simulation results show that p-q detection method and ip-iq detection method can realize effective detect, and ip-iq as a higher accuracy detection method is used in this paper. Thus SVPWM current tracking control and open loop SVC modeling and simulation analysis are done, also discussed the impact of low pass filter cut-off frequency on the current detection accuracy. Based on MATLAB/SIMULINK, a comprehensive simulation model of an integrated system response to nonlinear loads are built. Simulation results show that the parallel hybrid filter & SVC can quickly realize the harmonic and reactive power compensation efficiently, not only system’s harmonic is suppressed dynamically, but also the power factor is improved.
