Urban public space is an important manifistation of the quality of urban life. Comprehensive public facilities and their reasonable distribution are essential for people’s outdoor activities. And a comfortable and secure border is a prerequisite for theses activities to go on smoothly. Various borders are formed because of the closely linked buildings, streets and squares and border effect is widely used in urban public space. A comprehensive urban building fa?ade, reasonable distribution of urban streets and appropriate leisure square provide an active urban public space which can attract more and more people to concern urban architecture, experience urban streets and carry out activities in urban square. This thesis firstly presented a brief summary of the concept “border effect” and its theory. Then it listed the problems existing in modern design of public space and analyzed the relationship between public space design and border effect. Finally, based on the theory of public space of modern city and the reformation design of Hongjialou Square(Jinan City) and its nearby streets, this thesis aims to provide an urban space for activities and interaction with fully complete facilities and far-ranging recreational activities, in the hope of satisfying the needs of people in all walks of life with different age. Such design can help to ease the pressure of people flow around the business district and enhance the quality of city life.
