The plateau highway is the main artery of transportation; it is an important safeguard for economic development and social activities in plateau region. The plateau highway is placed in the mountain and heavy hillock area where geology is complex and changeable and ecological environment is fragile; the partial section is placed in the glacial area. Road alignment is affected by geological conditions; it shows the characteristics of many curves and abrupt slope and large height difference so that driving comfort, running speed and road traffic safety is seriously affected. Not only are drivers affected by the road alignment, but they also are disturbed by natural environment involving hypoxia, desiccation and radiation and so on; it’s necessary to conduct a study on driving suitability of highway alignment in the plateau. This article takes the comfort and safety of curve sections and straight line sections in the plateau highway as research objects based on the theories of ergonomics and traffic psychology, conducting questionnaire surveys and static detecting and driving experiments in the typical road section which is selected from G314 in the Pamirs. Drivers’psychological and physiological characters which are affected by the plateau hypoxia environment have obvious change by conducting questionnaire surveys of subjective psychology and static detecting on drivers of plateau highway. Drivers’dynamically psychological and physiological indexes which include heart rate and blood pressure and electromyography and electroencephalography and so on were tested to get the direct relationship between the change of drivers’psychological and physiological characters and major parameters of horizontal curve by using biofeedback 2000 x-pert in the driving experiments; by contrastive analysis of variation characteristics in all above dynamical indexes, heart rate can effectively reflect drivers’tensity and the effect degree of hypoxia on drivers at the same time in the plateau highway. Growth rate of heart rate is selected as an evaluation index of drivers’tensity to exclude the influence of the driver’s individual differences.By using statistical software SPSS, Establishing the relationship model among radius of horizontal curve, elevation and growth rate of drivers’heart rate as well as the relationship among length of straight line on curves, elevation and growth rate of drivers’heart rate without the influence of speed on change of heart rate by conducting partial correlations analysis among index of horizontal curve, elevation, running speed and growth rate of drivers’heart rate. The result shows that while driving on curve or straight line in the plateau highway, the higher elevation and the smaller radius of horizontal curve, the significantly more mental strain did the driver bear; the smaller length of straight line on curves and the higher elevation, the significantly more mental strain did the driver bear, which poses greater risk to the driving safety.
