Smart grid is the latest development trends of the power systems in the world. With a large number of intelligent substation pilot projects put into construction, the need for intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) is increasing quickly. There is great concern on the electromagnetic compatibility problem of IEDs in a gas insulated substation. IEDs may be confronted with severe transient electromagnetic disturbance due to proximity with the primary disturbance sources like the switching operation of a disconnector or a circuit breaker. This paper studies the electromagnetic disturbance characteristics of IED ports due to switching operations in GIS.Firstly, the paper develops an IED ports electromagnetic disturbance measurement system. Then, the electromagnetic disturbance characteristics of sensors and IEDs in 220kV and 500kV GIS is measured. Finally, the calculation model for ground potential rise caused by switching operations coupling to the circuit of "sensor-secondary cable-IED" is established. And the influence of shield grounding mode and load impedance on the electromagnetic disturbance of the ports of sensors and IEDs is simulation studied.Research achievements of this study can be used to provide a strong basis for the development of IED immunity requirements and the proposed protective measures.
