Along with the advance of the construction of silk road economic belt, maritime silk road and information network infrastructure of Hainan international tourism island, marine communication technology, wireless channel model for the designing of maritime wireless transmission system are of important theoretical significance and application value. This paper analysis the characteristic of radio propagation in the marine environment based on VHF and UHF, and establishes the radio propagation model approach form the two aspects of large scale fading and small scale fading. This is a theoretical multipath channel modeling approach applicable to various wireless transmission conditions, including different carrier frequencies, transmission distances, and sea states.Firstly, this paper establishes a radio propagation model with the integration of a3D model antenna direction gain model of ship motions. Using such a model, the radio propagation at different transmission distances and carrier frequencies under different motion types are analyzed.Secondly, this paper introduces an analytical approach for developing multipath channel model for wireless communications over sea. The presented modeling approach can establish the channel impulse response (CIR) consisting of specular multipath and diffuse multipath produced by smooth sea surface, rough sea surface and the nearby boat, respectively. Specifically, the diffuse multipath is obtained by accumulating diffuse scattering energy from the glistening surface. The methods of formulating specular multipath and diffuse multipath are given in detail.Thirdly, specular multipath and diffuse multipath are formulated using the analytical modeling approach, while the diffuse multipath is our focus of investigation for understanding the influence of scattering effect on the radio propagation over nearby boat and rough sea surface. Since the coastline hills and the surrounding ships are not involved in the channel modeling, the multipath model herein is thought to be valid for open sea areaFinally, multiple channel models under various transmission conditions, including different carrier frequencies, transmission distances, and sea states, are obtained and analyzed using the introduced channel modeling approach.
