Low-carbon, green and environmental protection have become the trend of development of rail transport in the world nowadays, and light rail vehicles are becoming a popular way of transport under this trend. Traction system provides power for light rail vehicles, and traction converters as the heart of light rail vehicles, are the core components to realize traction and electric braking of vehicle. In-depth research and improvement for traction converter shall play important role in realizing rapid and outstanding development for rail transport With the rapid development of rail equipment in China, especially the wide applications of light rail vehicles, increasing number of researchers have devoted themselves into the study of traction converter which shall be of great significance for achieving the ambitious target of ’sustainable development’.This paper mainly studies the traction converter system, while in aspects of cabinet design, hardware design and software design, raises technical solution with value of practical program application, such as in Changchun Light Rail vehicles. Main research contents are as follows:Analyzing the development trend of urban rail transit in China and global, combined with the technical requirements of Changchun Light Rail vehicle traction system, select a traction converter technology solution.First, does main circuit design and principle analysis of the traction converter, calculate the parameters of the main circuit and select the key components. Combined with the requirement that vehicles work under actual operating conditions, do main circuit simulation calculations, and verify the reasonableness of main circuit design.Then redesign traction converter cabinet. Design the new traction converter cabinet relate to the original cabinet structure size on vehicle, with optimization. Determine the solution of converter cabinet cooling system by analyzing thermal simulation of traction converter.Analyze the PWM modulation and control strategy for traction converter with practical engineering applications, introduce converter electric brake solution and illustration for anti-slip and anti-idling.Introduce the hardware and main components of the traction converter control system, and the control strategies by software. Test the traction converter, and analyze the results. The results show that the new traction converter can replace the original converter on vehicle, and be able to meet the needs for vehicles on practical running.
