Long distance water transfer project has became an important engineering measure to solve the severe water-shortage of serious water deficit areas. Overflow tower plays an important role in making the pressure and the flow pattern in the pipeline stable, and protects the long distance water transfer pipeline. The traditional overflow tower has the disadvantages of high investment and complex structure. In this paper, a new kind of overflow tower-dual pipe overflow tower is introduced after analyzing the traditional overflow tower. The physical model experiment was used to study the hydraulic characteristics of it. The achievements of this paper include several sides.(1)Summarize the practical significance of long distance water transfer project and The harm of water hammer pressure of pipeline. Point out the importance of the overflow tower in ensuring the safe operation of the pipeline.(2) Because the dual pipe overflow tower has the similarity in the structure with the siphon, this paper summarized the principle of siphon, and the kinds of siphon. Compares the siphon with the dual pipe overflow tower. Study on the velocity distribution of flow in the intake pipe and the flow pattern of drain pipe. After analyzing the changing of pressure, this paper points out the items of overflow tower that should be paid attention to in project.(3) Study the relationship between pressure value and flow and summarize the reason of the negative pressure appearing in the top of the overflow tower.(4) Combined with practical engineering, this paper has improved the original scheme, and gives the relationship between pressure head and water discharge of the overflow tower, providing a important reference for engineering practice.
