Shanghai is China’s economical and financial center which is located in theYangtze River estuary. Pudong New Area is near the East China Sea and in the mosteastern part of Shanghai, it is significantly affected by subtropical monsoon climate aswell as maritime climate. Seawall is an important building which is used to withstandtyphoons and defense tide in coastal areas, Pudong seawall is totally more than60kmlong and to protect the large population, industrial zones and transport hubs within theseawall. Once been damaged,it will bring huge economic losses, and the consequencescould be disastrous. So it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive real-time monitoringto Pudong seawall and guarantee its security operation.In this paper, under the analysis of the domestic and international research in relatedfields,Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was introduced to seawallsafety monitoring. As an example of the Shanghai Pudong seawall, development ofseawall visualized safety monitoring system was realized on the Visual Studio2008platform by using C#programming language and the rich GIS-related componentlibrary of ArcGIS Engine. In addition, multi-point regression model and Elman Artificial NeuralNetwork model were used to conducte a multi-point comprehensive modeling analysis of safetymonitoring data combined with mathematical modeling theory.Project example proved that, visualized seawall safety monitoring system operated well andthe accuracy of the multi-point comprehensive model was good, which was able to meet theengineering requirements. The development of this system fully realized2D and3D visualizationcapabilities, data management capabilitiesin and comprehensive modeling analysis of monitoringdata in seawall safety monitoring, enriched the means of seawall safety monitoring, improved theefficiency of seawall safety monitoring and had a positive meaning of the development of seawallsafety monitoring technology.
