This paper mainly studies the optimization of damping cylindrical shell structure. On the one hand, by comparing the result of ANSYS simulation and experiment, the vibration characteristics of different damping structure were analyzed. On the other hand, based on the evolutionary structural optimization method, the topological optimization of dampingcylindrical shell structure was performed using the ANSYS simulation software, and the optimal topology structure is obtained.First, modal experiment was carried out with different damping structures. Damping materials of different size were pasted on the cylindrical shells in different position. Model parameters with different boundary conditions such as natural frequence and model loss factor were obtained. Meanwhile finite element model was built and the comparison between simulation values and experiment values has been made to analyse the effect of vibration control and vibration characteristics of different damping structure. Then the optimization of damping material of free damping layer structure and the constrained damping layer structures were studied by the method of changing the element material to delete the inefficient units using the software ANSYS parametric design language based on the evolutionary structural optimization. The inhibitory effect of the mesh-independent filter method to the checkerboard pattern was studied and the best topological structures in special conditions was obtained.The thin-walled cylindrical shell structure is widely used in mechanical engineering and other fields, but it is easy to produce vibration and noise. Damping technology is an effective approach to control vibration and noise. The optimization of damping structure can saves the material consumption and retain the damping effect in maximam. To study about this has important guiding significance for actual engineneering application of the damping structure. Hence the optimization of damping cylindrical shell structure were preliminarily studied in the paper.
