Reliability and maintainability are indispensable concepts in the research of equipment life. Maintainability is closely related with reliability, and both of them are factors which determine effectiveness of the equipment. The paper discusses the change law of reliability and maintainability of the whole-lifetime system through establishing maintenance model for the system based on time-variant reliability, and it researches the methods of solving the reliability and maintainability index. Also, it analyses how to get the model’s related parameters through the engineering practice data. The main study contents are as follows(1) The basic maintenance theory is researched, and a maintenance model for the system based on time-variant reliability is established.(2) The calculating methods of maintenance intervals and reliability based on time-variant reliability model are researched, and the system’s reliability change is analyzed with the model.(3) The model’s calculation programs are programmed with MATLAB language; the model’s calculation interfaces are programmed with C language; and the simulation and data fitting are processed in the MATLAB environment.(4) The method how to determine the main parameters of the model through practical engineering data is researched. Also, the feasibility of the method is verified though an actual example.(5) A benefit degree function is introduced, which combine the reliability indicators and economic indicators, to determine the limit of the system technology state and the whole life of the system.(6) The validation of model’s usability is processed. An optimization of equipment monitoring system’s maintainability is processed using the new model; and it is compared with other model methods, from which the advantages and shortcomings of the new model are founded.
