The Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) can change the functionality and the capacity of the system by reconfiguring to meet the different production demand. One important problem in the operation of RMS is the optimization and selection of configuration during its reconfiguration. Based on known the configuration of current demand period and the production demand of the next demand period, the purpose of optimization and evaluation is to find the optimal configuration for the forthcoming demand period.To solve this problem, this paper studied the optimization and selection of configuration under demand scenario characterized by moderate variety and production volumes. The method of solving the problem in two stages is presented.In the first stage, the main issue is to solve the configuration optimization problem for RMS. The mathematical model for configuration optimization is built by using the reconfiguration cost as the objective, and we can solve the model and get candidate configurations by using the appropriate optimization algorithm. And the correctness of the mathematical model and the algorithm is verified by case study.In the second stage, we need to accomplish the evaluation and selection of candidate configurations, which is a multi-objective decision problem. We established a three level evaluation index system, and analyzed the connotation of each index. In order to get the optimal configuration of next demand period, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is adopted to evaluate the candidate configurations. The complexity of the selection of candidate configurations can be reduced effectively by the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, and it provides a simple and practical decision-making method for the rapid determination of optimal configuration of enterprises.
