Created in the1970s, ultrasonic motor (USM) is one of the novel motors which has beendeveloping rapidly. Different from the conventional electric motor, USM is based on theinverse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric material, causing the ultrasonic vibration ofstator which is motivated by high frequency alternating current, to obtain a frictional drivingforce, which then drives the rotor, pressed against the stator. The vibrational frequency ofUSM is normally above20kHz. Due to the features such as compact in size, structureflexible, no magnetic interactive effect, USM has obtained wide recognition by theacademia and industry, and has advanced fast in the past dozen years.Based on the intensive study of USM, this paper introduces a novel bowl-like USM. Themodelization, finite element analysis, optimization and simulation has been studied to provethe feasibility of the novel USM. The contents are summarized as follows:Firstly, the principles, classification, development and applications of USM aresystematically reviewed, and the present situation of USM is outlined.Subsequently, on the basis of a comprehensive study on piezoelectric transducer, which isthe core component of USM, the novel bowl-like USM has been designed along with itsmaterial analysis and solid modeling.Thirdly, by using finite element analysis and ANSYS software, modal analysis has beencompleted to demonstrate the reasonability of operation modal of piezoelectric transducerand to determine the driving frequency primarily. For the further determination of choosingthe precise driving frequency, harmonic response analysis has been introduced to improvethe accuracy of the parameters. Moreover, internal dimensions of piezoelectric transducerhave been optimized to improve operational stability. The operative mode of piezoelectrictransducer has been simulated to ensure the feasibility of the novel USM.Finally, we designed the driving circuit for the novel USM. The whole circuit is including the control unit, the signal unit, the power amplifier unit. We focus on the unit and signalpower amplifier unit circuit design, preliminary reached the driving frequency controllableand the purpose of the driving voltage is adjustable.
