Rotating machinery has been widely used in all kinds of mechanical devices, including aerospace engines, steam turbine engines, nuclear power equipment and generating sets. Being the key part of national basic industry, rotating machinery plays an essential role in national economic areas such as chemical industry, textile industry, electricity, aviation industry and mechanical industry. Key components of rotor systems usually fail because of a variety of failures. Therefore, it has important theoretical and practical value to develop the analysis and design of reliability and reliability-based sensitivity of large-scale rotor systems. Meanwhile, this kind of research has been more and more supported and approved by business and relevant industry.Based on a considerable amount of domestic and overseas literature, this paper took the T4impeller of a compressor used in a megaton ethylene device for research object. Firstly, it employed the ANSYS and APDL to establish the parametric FEM program, and the maximum stress and its corresponding point under the effect centrifugal force under the circumstance of high speed revolution was then obtained. Using the ISIGHT to integrate the ANSYS to conduct orthogonal test, this paper obtained the first five influential basic random parameters through Pareto analysis. Secondly, the limit functions were fitted by the ELMAN neural network which was verified then and approximately replaced the FEM model when processing reliability analysis. Finally, reliability and reliability-based sensitivity was conducted and confirmed by the Monte-Carlo method. It was obtained the systematic reliability and the curve that described the changes of reliability corresponding with the mean value of basic random parameters, the sequence on which the sensitivity of the mean value and variance of basic random parameters were influenced by reliability, and the parameters that had great influence on reliability. These results were then provided to the design and manufacturing departments as references.The technique employed in this paper can be used in other similar impellers of similar compressors.
