With the continuous development and progress of the current science andtechnology, mankind has entered the information age, the battlefield transforms fromthe traditional model of "platform-centric" to the "network-centric". Under theconditions of the various branches of information technology joint operationsbecome the main mode of the current operations. However, the branches of ourinformation systems are independently, which resulting in coordinated operationscan’t achieve efficient exchange of information, knowledge sharing andinteroperability among combat units, systems, and equipment. In order to solve thisproblem, we introduce the concept of the ontology to analysis the battlefieldsituation and take advantage of the superiority on knowledge representation ofontology to provide a common recognition of the knowledge base for jointoperations. This paper mainly studies on the key technologies in ontology-basedbattlefield situation consistency. They can convert the situation information of thevarious branches to a unified format and a common recognized ontology knowledge, which provides situation consistency understanding on common concern operationalareas for the commander of joint operations. The main research work andachievements are as follows:1. Summarize of the semantic web and ontology has been introduced. Itincludes the concept and the architecture of semantic web, the concept and theelements of ontology, ontology description language, OWL ontology frame and soon. Then we have analyzed the feasibility of ontology applied to the battlefieldsituation assessment.2. A battlefield situation consistency framework based on ontology has beenproposed. Firstly, it introduces the basic theory of situation assessment; Then, itprovides the concept and connotation of battlefield consistency; Finally, according tothe feature that the ontology owns a shared characteristic formal specification on aconceptual model, the paper proposes the battlefield situation consistency generalframework based on ontology. So that to achieve battlefield situation informationsharing and interoperability. This framework ensures that different levels of situationapplications are based on the battlefield situation consistency. 3. We has built a battlefield situation assessment domain ontology model. It isthe basis of the realization of battlefield situation consistency. Firstly, we outline theconstruction methods and procedures of situation assessment domain ontologymodel; Secondly, we propose the situation assessment domain ontology model.Through the specific UML design and OWL description to realize this ontologymodel.4. One way to realize the situation assessment domain ontology based onrelational database has been presented. According to the fact that battlefield situationinformation is generally exiting in the form of relational database, this way can beconverted the heterogeneous information from the different branches to thebattlefield situation assessment domain ontology. It is the one of the keytechnologies to achieve battlefield situation consistency. Firstly, situationinformation of relational database reverses to EER conceptual model; Secondly, through the model of situation domain ontology, we convert EER conceptual modelto the model of situation domain ontology; Finally, we make the model of situationdomain ontology instantiation.5. This paper has developed a prototype system. The prototype system is basedon the Eclipse integrated development environment and the MySQL database. Theexperiment results show that: the method of situation assessment domain ontologymodel and situation assessment domain ontology construction based on relationaldatabase is a feasible and effective solution used to solve situation consistency.
