Children are the hope of a family and the future of a country. Of so many elements of theliving environment, a peaceful and comfortable home environment is very important becauseit plays important roles in cultivating children’s healthy attitude, unique personality, and abetter quality. Color is an important factor to human beings to perceive surroundingenvironment. Children are more sensitive to colors which in turn could affect the body, spirit, emotion, and behavior of children. The ultimate goal of the children’s room color design is to provide a healthy and happygrowth environment and to foster independence and autonomy of children. Children atdifferent ages do not perceive awareness and sense of color to the same degree. Colorapplication in children’s rooms should be different while they are at different age. Due tohistorical and social development reasons, research on color application and personality andpsychology of children is not well conducted. It lacks a more complete theory to guide how tobetter apply the color in the children’s room. Therefore, it is very useful and important toapply sophisticated color theory and knowledge, combine with China’s traditional culture, aesthetic concepts, psychology, etc. while decorating children’s bedroom. This paper intended to explore how to better apply color in the children’s rooms. Itspecifically included three sections:1) analyze similarities and differences in colorpreferences between preschool children (4-6years old) and primary school children (7-10years old);2) introducing basic elements and theory of color;3) explore color application ofpreschool and primary school children’s rooms. The first part of this thesis focused on the similarities and differences in color preferencethrough a survey of80preschool children (4-6years old) and550primary school children(7-10years old). The results showed that:1) preschool children (4-6years old) more likesophisticated, high-purity hue, such as red, blue, yellow, green; there are some differences incolor preference between the boys and girls: girls prefer red, yellow, blue, green; boys aremore favored blue, green, red, yellow.2) There is no significant difference in colorpreferences of students (7-10years old) to the interior walls, furniture, and decorative objects, they like color with sophisticated, high-purity hue. Compared with the4-6year old preschoolers, students (7-10years old) like red, yellow, blue, orange, green, etc. Primaryschool girls much prefer red, yellow, orange and other colors; primary school boys are morefavored blue, yellow, green, red and other colors. In terms of children’s behavior, physiologyand psychology, and perception external environment changes, the period of4-10ages ofchildren is an important period of rapid development. Physiological and psychologicalinfluences of colors on human implications are interrelated. The second part describes the color is particularly important in children’s room design. It needs basic knowledge of color and tries new color elements. Integrating these two parts isessential while designing a beautiful healthy children room. Specifically, it needs not onlymore widely recognized Munsell color system as the basic knowledge, but also consideringdifferences between children and adults living room. At the same time, it needs to understandwell about the three elements of color, such as hue, lightness and purity. Finally, it needs tofollow the four following laws of color formal beauty: balanced and stability, rhythm andrhythm, unity and change, reconciliation and contrast.Part III intended to provide suggestion and guidance on how to better apply color tochildren’s room based on the results of Part I and II. While designing4-6years old children’srooms, it is better to choose a little more colors and patterns. Colors with warm tones arebetter used in the girls’ room, but boy’s room is better with cool colors. For those7-10years-old children with impetuous character, expensive, overly extroverted characters, youcan choose some neutral, light colors; for those children at the same age with more introvertedcharacters, it can be appropriate to use some brightness, high color purity to decorate theirbedroom. In addition, we gave some suggestions on two examples of the worse application ofcolor in the children’s room. Finally, this thesis provided suggestions and recommendations onapply colors while designing children’s rooms, such as following color design rules, prioritizing primary and secondary colors, grasping the quality and quantity of color variation.
