Flanging forming is a crucial sheet metal parts processing method characterized by a common form of curve flanging forming. We have concluded from long-term experiences and tests in production that shape distortion is a common phenomenon in curve flanging, which may cause some dimension tolerance of parts, shape distortion and other serious consequences. On the basis of previous studies, this paper focuses on an investigative analysis of the causes and influencing factors of shape distortion to curve flanging parts in order to seek a remedy of modifying the blank shape and size for obtaining qualified parts, and thus reducing or eliminating the effect of distortion on the work-piece size after flanging. The main research work is as follows:In this project we studied the regularities of stress and strain in curve flanging, summarized large amounts of results of simulation data analysis based on Abaqus finite element, and finally obtained the regularities of stress strain on the distortion zone in curve flanging. The distribution regularities of distortion has been achieved as well, subsequent to a comprehensive analysis of the specific effects of material properties, dimensions, process parameters and other factors on the distortion. The results from the study will guide the production practice better and provide basis for the modification of blank size and shape in an effort to reduce and eliminate the distortion influence on the quality of parts.The research is based on an in-depth study on the shape distortion regularities of curve flanging parts while simplifying the calculation process by putting forward a simpler method for blank shape and dimension modification, which can decrease the effect of shape distortion on the part size and shape. It has been established by the process test that the forming of modified specimen, compared to the unmodified specimen forming, demonstrates a more consistent flanging height and better vertical edge and web. The method proposed in this paper can be applied to produce curve flanging parts that meet the requirements of the standard.
