Power cables are widely used in practical engineering projects at the current. The reasonable determination of the type of power cables is an important work, because it can ensure the stable operation of power system and cut down the project costs. The selection of cable core cross section is an important factor of cable selection. The carrying capacity of cable varies with different installation conditions. Then, the accurate calculation of the actual current carrying capacity of cables is vital for the further recheck of cable core section.This paper first compares two kinds of commonly used high-voltage cables. Then, it introduces the function of each component of XLPE insulated cable in detail as the basis of cable selection.The power cable design software developed by Shan Dong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute is used in our paper as the main tool. Based on the practical experience and a large amount of simulations, this paper identifies the main influence factors of cable current carrying capacity and analyzes the relationship between the cable current carrying capacity and the main influence factors.The method which is used in practical projects should meet the demand of accuracy and simplified the calculation. Therefore, this paper set up a simple calculation rules to estimate the carrying capability of the cables by using the multivariate linear regression. Test results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
