The square, as the city’s public space, not only carries the functions of leisure, entertainment, communication, and social activities of the public, but also is the window for political, economic, historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of the city. City square building, however, is affected and limited by many factors and conditions. Spatial scales, as the important factor that constitutes square landscape form, determine the spatial structure of square, the coordination between imagined form and proportional relationship. Thus, control of the spatial scale is one important part of the process of the square design and an important guarantee to determine the spatial relationship and the visual effects of the city square. Analyzing the domestic and foreign famous city squares according to the city square space’s characteristics of diversity, function, and complexity of space, among other things, is important. The study is aimed at the present problems about the spatial scales that frequently occur during the city square construction in our country, from the perspective of visual effect and the study of human body engineering, combined with the related experience and data of construction scale. This thesis analyzes and researches the square spatial scale, and hopefully, the research data can provide certain help and reference for future square design. In this thesis, the first chapter introduces the research background, purpose and meaning. The second chapter analyzes the related concepts of space scale, from the space to function scales, the concept of visual scale and the content of the national scale, providing a foundation for later analysis. The third chapter, traces the history of the city square, analyzing the development and evolution of square design in the aspect of form and scale at home and abroad, and analyzes current problems in the urban square design while providing a solution. The fourth chapter is the key section of this thesis. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the ways to control the scale of the square design from three aspects---three levels that from the square scale, land use composition of square and primary and secondary partition of square. Based on the function of scale, focus the analysis on visual space scale, and try to put forward the conclusion of best visual scale. The fifth chapter verifies the research results to three case studies utilizing research at home and abroad. This thesis classifies the square from the perspective of visual aesthetics according to the classification of morphology and selected square shape square as a representative for research. This is based on the functional scale, starting from the visual features, put forward in the visual scale scope for square space design. The contents include quantitative scale control from macro scale, about overall size scale, to micro scale, about square landscape elements, square zoning and land use related scale.
