With the rapid development of the technology, the automotive industry has become a pillar industry of our country’s economy. Car is becoming more and more important in people’s production and life.Therefor, people’s requirement about car’s quality and performance has increased. As one of the key parts of the engine, the processing and manufacturing quality of the connecting rod not only affects the performance of the car, but also directly affects the performance of vehicle. In the Engine connecting rod’s process of manufacture, the key geometric size detection is a key factor to safeguard the quality of engine connecting rod, Traditional detection techniques and methods have been unable to completely meet the production requirements, We urgent need a simple, rapid and accurate detection method to solve a connecting rod size detection problem in the process of production and processing. Aiming at this situation, this article put forward a kind of engine connecting rod geometry size detection method based on machine vision on the basis of in-depth study of the existing method.Detection of target and technical requirements are the decisive factors in visual detection system hardware. According to the inspection goal of engine connecting rod geometry characteristics, the system is mainly composed of CCD camera, camera, light source, light controller, programmable controller, computer, etc. By the camera after the engine connecting rod of light source imaging, homomorphic filtering algorithm based on wavelet analysis for the acquisition filtering the target image, preliminary separation from Adaptive Otsu threshold segmentation algorithm of target image and background to conduct, image segmentation and edge fitting and extracted by multi-scale watershed algorithm, after the goal of image processing for feature extraction and parameter calculation for obtaining detection parameters, this method realize the measurement objective. At last we test the feasibility of the method proposed in this article. This article is based on the Microsoft Visual c++2010as a software development platform, using OpenCV image processing library components, design and develop a engine connecting rod geometric parameters detection system. With the detection of the engine connecting rod geometry size by visual inspection system, the test results show that the visual detection method proposed in this paper has feasibility and good robustness, and can meet the fast, high requirements of detection of the geometric size of engine connecting rod, solve the geometry dimension measurement problem during processing of engine connecting rod.
