Fiber reinforced polymer (abbr. FRP) is widely applied in structure-reinforce field especially for concrete structures, because of the advantages of high strength, low weight-strength ratio and other excellent characters. However, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (abbr. CFRP) is still the main material used to strengthen structure. Igneous fiber reinforced polymer (abbr. IFRP) is a new material made from igneous rocks. The property of IFRP is steady, and its mechanical property is quite good. IFRP is much cheaper than CFRP, and can be used in the strengthening of concrete structures.Nowadays, the existing experimental and theoretical analysis of RC square columns strengthened with IFRP is still deficient. Especially, there are only few researches considering the initial load and load-off. The characteristics of RC square columns strengthened with IFRP by experiment, theoretical derivation and simulation analysis are studied in this article. The main work and conclusions of this paper are listed as follows:(1) Considering the initial load of the columns, the experiment scheme contains different loading-histories in this paper. The influence of experimental phenomenon, the damage form on the bearing capacity, stress and strain has been analyzed.(2) Based on the experiment results and the existing theories of RC square columns strengthened with FRP, the calculation model of capacity of axial compression of RC square columns strengthened with IFRP has been modified. The modified model can estimate the peak stress of the strengthened columns with IFRP. According to the comparison of calculation results between the modified model and the standard formula, the results of modified model are more precise. In addition, according to the existing damage theories, a brief damage analysis of columns in different loading-histories has been made.(3) The process of the experiment with the concrete damage plastic model has been simulated and analyzed by ABAQUS. The comparison has been made among the experimental results, theoretical results and simulation results. The results show that the simulation results and the calculating results of the modified model match well with the experimental results.
