Many railway lines in most of China are limited by complex terrain, such as mountains, valleys, ditches, so the tall pier bridges are unavoidable in some special districts. At the same time, lots of areas are belong to the high intensity earthq uake region, if piers are destroyed by the earthquake, it will bring serious inconvenience for dealing with emergencies and providing relief after the earthquake. As a result, the seismic research on tall pier should be taken into enough account. The column-plate tall pier is a new type, likes shear wall, which is connected with columns by plates and different from the traditional pier. When the new type column-plate tall pier is struck by earthquake, the consumption of most energy is taken by cracking of the plate to protect the normal working order of pier column, which improves the seismic capacity of whole bridge. The paper based on the height more than 100 m of column-plate hollow tall pier in the zongmugou railway bridge with span of(78+2×136+78)m, specific content as follows:(1) On the basis of column-plate hollow tall pier, four scale models in the third segment of the tall pier are made respectively in the longitudinal and transverse directions, the failure forms and hysteretic characteristics of the column and plate respectively is obtained through the quasi-static tests under horizontal cyclic loading.(2) The simulation and nonlinear seismic response characteristics of the plate are studied based on experimental results and the finite element analysis software Midas C ivil. Through modeling the plate with mature two spring model, which is borrowed shear walls, it finds the parameters about two spring model are inappropriate to the kind of plate, so the suggested value based on experimental results for the column-plate structure model is raised.(3) The finite element model of the whole bridge is established by modified two spring model and truss model. The displacement of the pier top, internal forces of the key section was calculated under the rare earthquake. The results show the plate can consume the energy to protect the pier column under the action of the earthquake.(4) Solid model is established and analyzed by using finite element analysis software Midas FEA under horizontal loading. And the influence about stresses distribution and cracks of model openings under the cracking load, yield load and ultimate load are studied.
