In recent years, due to the frequent occurrence of traffic accidents, road traffic safety has become an important subject which is concerned by the people all over the world. Drivers need to keep appropriate safety car distance, which is the key to solve the problem. As we all know, in the transportation system made up of people, vehicle and environment, the driver’s position is crucial. In the research of the vehicle safety, we must fully consider the influence of personality differences during different driver’s on driving behavior. This dissertation focuses on the research of driver characteristics reflected by driver manipulation behavior, and driver characteristics analysis and classification method using the driving simulator provided by Shandong University of Technology.Firstly, the article has analyzed and described the process of driving behavior, driver characteristics and reasons for the differences. And the original environment of the driving simulator has been develop ed and improved with the use of VS2008 programming, so virtual environment under three conditions of vehicle driving can be built. Based on it, author of the paper organize drivers to test and collect the related data of the brake control. Secondly, the experimental data are analyzed based on the characteristic of drivers.(Because many unstable factors exist in the experimental process and the experimental equipment is not so easy to control, which leads to the final amount of the available sample decreased, the results of data analysis has also some limitations). The paper use SPSS to probe into the impact of driver’s characteristic on brake safety. In addition, the drivers’ characteristic reflected by the related braking-data information using the descriptive statistics of the data has been discussed. Finally, the method of fuzzy clustering is used to achieve the classification of the drivers’ characteristic. With choosing appropriate evaluation index, through the orderly data processing, so we can achieve a reasonable classification of driver characteristics. Also, the method for a specific driver classification is illustrated. Thus, different models of braking-safe distance between vehicles have been finally established based on different classification of drivers.
