With the rapid growth of China’s urban population, metropolitan congestion is getting worse. Faced with construction land scarcity, highlighted safety issues, counterterrorism pressure, environmental degradation, housing stress and other factors, metropolitan development occurs many negative issues. One of the fundamental way to solve this problem is to vigorously develop underground space, transfer the suitable functional space to underground space. Make full use of the subway, underground roads, business, transportation hub and other underground space can be achieved to improve the development of intensive, decrease hybrid vehicles, clean ground transportation, reduce energy consumption, prosperous business environment, increase green ground, lessening the ground caused by construction dust, cut down vehicle exhaust. Thus creating a livable city with fresh air and beautiful environment.Safety of underground space has become a major issue of concern. Urban underground space not only faced with the man-made disasters, fires, terrorist attacks, accidents and other operations, but also with the earthquake, rainwater, storms and other natural disasters. Especially underground space fires, disasters will be far more than the ground floor. Therefore, as the city’s lifeline engineering, urban underground space must have a good safety and disaster prevention technology.The underground roads, metro and other typical transportation systems were focused in this paper. Experiment were done for underground road smoke control and signage read. Subway facility improvement were simulated by computer. Achievements are as follows:Through field full-size model of experimental and applied computational fluid dynamics simulation software CFX, the temperature field, gas concentration, visibility, smoke speed underground transport system of distribution under fire were studied, safety evacuation systems and smoke control system were combined, solutions adapted to the safe evacuation of underground roads were proposed;The factors of signage size, material, location and vehicle were analyzed through the tunnel experiments which provide scientific support for the city’s underground tunnels and multi-storey transportation hub sign design;The Beiguan station of Beijing Subway Line 6 pedestrian simulation model were established and analyzed, security infrastructure improvement were got which can provide help for similar projects.The achievements about smoke spread characteristics and traffic signs in underground roads, subway security facility improvement this paper got provided help for the safety design of urban underground space.
