Nowadays China’s rapid development has astonished the whole world, however, as people are amazed by the quick economic development, there exist so many problems such as the damage of environment, the traffic congestion, the indifferent human relationship and the emotional isolation, etc. Besides all above, the psychological emptiness of urban residents is also an important item. In order to make up for the mental loneliness and seek spiritual consolation, more and more urban residents start choosing to feed pet dogs to resolve loneliness, which leads to the fast growth in the number of pet dogs in recent years. But along with the increase in the number of pet dogs, that of the dog walkers also increases correspondingly, causing relevant troubles. For example, there appears the contradiction between humans and dogs on the outdoor space in residential area. In terms of the current situation, because of some problems like feces and noise, existing residential parks have been unable to solve or even adjust this increasing contradiction. Therefore, there should be an area that can separate humans and dogs and that meets both the needs of pet dogs and dog owners in residential parks daily used by residents. This area is the residential dog walking area that this article will study. Although dog walking area is the one that exists individually, it is a part affiliated to the residential park. Both of them constitute the entirety and should never be separated. So the residential dog walking area is supposed to have relevant requirements, factors and schemes of landscape planning and design.Combined with actual situation, this article regards the residential dog walking area as the object of study, which extends in meaning from the concept of the mature pet parks in Europe, America and other developed countries. It also makes full use of related theories and methods of landscape planning and design to have a deep study and discussion from two aspects-- theoretical study and practice. Moreover, combined with the actual results of the site investigation and the state quo of site research, it still makes full use of the theoretical knowledge of landscape architecture, landscape aesthetics, landscape ecology, environmental psychology, environmental behavior and other subjects to discuss the necessity of the existence of residential dog walking area and its relevant methods in landscape planning and design, looking forward to opening up a separate dog walking area used by dog keepers and their pet dogs for the existing residential areas at this stage and making landscape planning and design for the dog walking area. This article also aims at providing constructive advice for the landscape planning and design on building residential dog walking area in future during the later period by spreading through the way of making experiments in some residential areas, with valuable experience in practice. This article centers on this purpose closely and mainly includes the following aspects in terms of the whole:Above all, after sorting out related data at home and abroad, the author obtains the concept of residential dog walking area by analyzing the definition of pet parks. Secondly, by studying residential dog walking area, this article analyzes the effects of dog walking area and its landscape planning and design and also lists enough evidence through authentic survey results of questionaire.Thirdly, this article obtains the basic requirements and strategies for residential dog walking area’s related landscape planning and design by expounding, analyzing and summarizing related theoretical knowledge. Fourthly, this article obtains feasible and specific landscape planning and design scheme specially for residential dog walking area through further reflection and analysis. Finally, it analyzes domestic and foreign cases according to the obtained specific scheme in order that relevant methods of improving have been obtained to instruct practice.
