In this paper, according to the characteristics of high liquid limit, high water content and large deformation of high liquid limit soil, and combine with Guangxi Guanfeng expressway to study. We found that a large number of high liquid limit soil distribute along the express way. It doesn’t meet the requirements of specification, if it’s used as roadbed filler directly. The soil must be processed to meet the construction requirements. This paper uses Fractal Theory and combines with image processing technology to study the mechanism of high liquid limit soil improved by lime from microcosmic angle. Thus, according to the change of the soil microstructure before and after the improvement quantitatively analyze the effect of lime ameliorant. Through research, the following results are obtained:(1) Based on a large amount of field and laboratory test, we studied the changes in physical and mechanical properties of high liquid limit soil improved by lime and systematically analyze the road performance of high liquid limit soil improved by lime.(2)Analyze the soil mineral structure、soil cementation method and the change of soil pore from microcosmic angle. By using Fractal Theory and combines with image processing technology, the soil porosity, pore size and number, pore edge roughness are studied.(3) Through the calculation of the fractal dimension of different fractal model, we set up the relationship between fractal dimension and soil strength, curing time, dry density, permeability ratio and particle bite force.(4) According to the principle of effective stress of unsaturated soil, we study the changes of macro and micro mechanical properties of high liquid limit soil improved by lime. Associate the changes of soil micro structure with macroscopic properties, and help us better explain the mechanism of high liquid limit soil improved by lime.
