“Harmony Between Matter And Me, Enlightment Gained Through Apperception” —Synaesthesia Research With Respect To Interior Space Shape

Proceeding with basic conception of synaesthesia, this paper focuses on the application rule and significance of synaesthesia in interior design. The paper consists of four chapters, of which, Chapter I briefly introduces the research background and current situation of synaesthesia; Chapter II, combining with other subjects, focuses on the significance of synaesthesia in interior design with respect to five senses, namely visual sense, hearing, tactile sense, taste sense and smell; Chapter III discusses the rules and characteristics of synaesthesia, and gives corroborative evidences in series; Chapter IV, on basis of the three mentioned contents, discusses the development direction and prospective of synaesthesia design in future by practically designing in a certain area of Beijing.At present, significantly influenced by modernism, an idea as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s “less is more” has already been the precept of a mountain of modern designers, for which severe “homogenization” arises frequently in regard to interior space shape design. However, consumers profoundly expect a “home” that may satisfy their physiological and psychological needs instead of a “house” that is created step by step without emotional design contents but a clear-cut style. With this contradiction, “ synaesthesia ” interior design emerges. Synaesthesia is defined systematically in this paper to discuss its universality and susceptibility. Provided that other sensory experience stored in memory may supplement, enrich and develop the main feeling to give things react indirectly and to form a virtuality-reality combined, and existence & inexistence combined aesthetic image, synaesthesia generates. The proper use of synaesthesia may activate five senses of consumers and, thereby make them be satisfied on personality and in mind.Interior space design is mutually affected with human life and, therefore the literary proposition “ synaesthesia ” gradually shows its research benefits in all aspects. However, the regularity study of synaesthesia with respect to interior space shape design is really rare, not to mention researches on design methods and principles. Supported by theoretical researches of predecessors, with the help of questionnaires and depth interviews as well as product fabrication, this paper analyzes principles of “synaesthesia” and summarizes current situations and tendency of the interior space shape so as to facilitate its benign services for society and human being.
