As one of the mainly moving components of the internal combustion engine, the connecting rod has complicated structural shape and harshly working environment. It bears the complexly alternating load in the process of work. The reliability of the connecting rod has a great influence on the internal combustion engine. It is important to reduce the quality of the connecting rod, so as to reduce the adverse effects generated by the inertial force in the premise of sufficient intensity and rigidity of the connecting rod. With the continuous development of computer software, the large finite element software has been widely applied in the structure analysis and optimization of the parts of the internal combustion engine.In this thesis, the connecting rod of 4102 B internal combustion engine was selected as our research subject. Its working process was analyzed, motion laws as well as stress in movement about the crank link mechanism was analyzed to obtain the precise analysis results. Then a complicated 3D model of the connecting rod was set up using the software Pro/E. Then import the model to Hyper Mesh to mesh. Then the model was introduced into ABAQUS for static finite element analysis. The stress and transformation nephogram under the dangerous operating mode were obtained, and the strength, stiffness and fatigue characteristics analysis was carried out so as to find the dangerous point of the connecting rod in the work process. Then the objective function is established, the constraint conditions and the design variables were determined, to optimize the design of the connecting rod’s structure. There was a reduction on the quality of the connecting rod to reduce the inertia force. The stress concentration eased. The distribution of the connecting rod structure is more reasonable. At last, the modal finite element model was established using the software ABAQUS. The constraint modal analysis was carried out based on the theory of the modal analysis. The natural frequency and the vibration shape were obtained, which is used to test if the structure of the optimized one is reasonable from the view of the dynamic.
