The water supply facilities including raw water intake facilities, water treatment facilities, transmission and distribution facilities and water service connections are the important infrastructure. Earthquakes are the potential threat of water supply facilities in China. The Biliuhe reservoir as a large (â…¡) reservoir is the most important water source in Dalian. The city of Dalian locates in the Tan-lu earthquake belt. An earthquake with Richter magnitude 7.3 occurred in Haicheng, close to Dalian in 1975. Several earthquakes took place in the Bohai Bay. Therefore, the impact of the earthquake must be taken into account in design.The study on the seismic resistant assessment of the sections of concrete gravity dam of Biliuhe reservoir is carried out. The dynamic model tests of retaining dam and overflow dam are performed. Meanwhile, using ANSYS software, seismic response of the concrete gravity dam is analyzed.The main works of this paper can be described as follows:1. Based on the joint elasticity and gravity similarities, the dynamic models of concrete gravity dam are designed. The material tests of simulating concrete are done to determine the properties of the simulating concrete. Considering the seismic input directions, the dynamic model tests of retaining dam and overflow dam are performed, respectively. The dynamic characteristics of the concrete dams are measured. The failure modes and procedures are disclosed with the increase of seismic input amplitudes. Some factors influencing model tests have been concerned, such as the influence of high-frequency modes, size of foundation, reservoir water etc. The conclusions are based on the numerical analysis and the model tests.2. Using ANSYS,3D finite element models of the retaining dam and overflow dam are established, respectively. The factors such as high-frequency modes, size of foundation, reservoir water are obtained quantitatively. The initial cracking accelerations of the prototype concrete dams subject to earthquakes are determined.3. Considering the different loading cases for the concrete dams during construction and operation, seismic response of the dams are calculated. Especially, the effects of temperature load on the seismic response of the dams are studied in detail. The seismic resistant performance of the Biliuhe dam is evaluated.
