On-board satellite communication system is mainly used for the transmission of multimedia broadband data, highly demanding to flexible control of antenna pattern, so as to the phased array antenna which satisfies the requirements has become a hot research of many scholars. Based on the study of the microstrip phased array antenna this paper presents a Ku-band circular and planar microstrip phased array antenna and the radiating element is microstrip patch antenna with circular polarized, and it has good performance.According to the requirements of mobile satellite antenna, analyzing and designing of a circular polarization microstrip antenna unit, give the patch size, feeding mode and implementation method of the circular polarization, the unit has good resonant characteristics, radiation characteristics and the characteristics of circular polarization.Deriving circular antenna array pattern on the structure of the plane is and analyzing the factors affecting radiation characteristics of the circular array, and these factors include the way the array arrangement, the number of array elements and the excitation phase of the elements and so on. Therefore it also summarizes some valuable laws, which are the theoretical basis of the design and simulation of microstrip phased array.According to the analysis and calculation, design of phased array antenna for mobile satellite receiving system is given, and the 128-element circular microstrip phased array antenna meets the requirements for the satellite broadcast. Finally, the antenna element and the 24-element phased array are simulated. The cutaway and square patch antenna element simulated meets specification requirements basically.24-element circular microstrip phased array antenna is simulated by finite-array-method, getting scanning characteristics of the array, Along with changes in the phase difference between array elements adjacent to each loop on the array, enabling continuous scanning pitch surface of -23°~23° and 360° azimuth plane scanning, reaches the objectives and the requirements. Therefore, this design of circular polarization microstrip phased array antenna has good radiation characteristic and scanning features.
