With the development of technology on the rockfill, the height of the rockfill dam is increasing, and the coarse granular soil, which is the main material in dam engineering, suffer higher stress. Therefore the particle breakage of the coarse granular soil gets increasingly notable.The particle breakage directly modifies the structure of the coarse granular soil, influencing its strength, stress strain relation and creep deformation. Through the triaxial tests, the domestic and foreign scholars have done a lot of research work on the particle breakage and achieved plentiful research results. For example, the particle breakage under the isotropic consolidation, and particle breakage of coarse aggregate under different confining pressure and stress level have been studied. However, the breakage law of the coarse granular soil during the shearing is still unclear. In this paper, the main purpose is to study the law of the particle breakage during drained triaxial shearing and the primary works as follows:(1) A large scale of triaxial tests have been performed by a large scale triaxial apparatus, whose materials were mainly taken from a rockfill of the Gushui concrete face rockfill dam. Stress-strain lines under the different shear strain are drawn from data obtained from these tests, which provide theoretical basis for the research on the particle breakage.(2) In the paper, the standard of particle less than 2mm is provided to ensure the accuracy on serve analysis.(3) In this paper, the particle breakage of the basalt rockfill of the Gushui concrete face rockfill dam during the sample preparation, consolidation and drained triaxial shearing was studied by using the consolidate drained triaxial tests.(4) The relationship between the weathering model parameter and particle breakage was studied according to the grading curves before and after the tests. The weathering model parameter reflects the size and distribution of the area surrounded by the grading curve and the largest particle size curve.
