In China, a large number of city infrastructures are being built every year such as large span bridges, high-rise buildings, nuclear power station and reservoir dam, etc. The quality and safety are the key to the life span of the infrastructure under construction. Many approaches were taken, but some critical region of the city infrastructures such as the suspension bridge, anchorage and pile caps of high-rise building foundation, nuclear power station dam are still suffering from the cracking issue. In recent years, temperature monitoring systems were utilized in the city infrastructure constructions. However, some drawbacks in the existing mass concrete temperature monitoring systems are still exist. For example there are a large number of wires connected to the temperature sensors, the monitoring parameters need to be calculated by hand. These drawbacks make the installation of temperature monitoring system very time-consuming and the information is not real-time. In this paper, a mass concrete temperature monitoring system is developed, the system includes wireless sensors, wireless sensor networks and a smart monitoring software.The main contents are outlined below.(1) Hardware for the mass concrete monitoring system was developed which includes wireless temperature sensors and sensor network, fiber grating temperature sensor and integrated monitoring system, onsite monitoring system, remote access system. The hardware of the mass concrete monitoring system allows the functionalities of multi-parameter monitoring, wireless sensing and harsh environments adaptive, local and remote access.(2) Software for the mass concrete monitoring system was developed which can configure the sensors’data acquisition interval, diagnose sensor’s health status, display the monitoring parameters such as inner temperature, surface temperature, inner-surface temperature difference, the cooling water temperature and the environment temperature both in 3D vision and in history curve. And the temperature changing rate and the maximum history temperature are calculated by the software automatically. All the data can be export to Excel file format. The software for the mass concrete fulfills the requirements of automatic monitoring and data management.(3) The wireless mass concrete monitoring system developed was applied in a mass concrete experiment project and a mass concrete project for a bridge.Applications of the monitoring system in two a real-world mass concrete construction projects proves the convenience and reliability of the system. The features of automatic acquisition and storage of data, display and warning of the temperature of the mass concrete, data management and analysis makes the system fulfills the requirements of the mass concrete temperature monitoring.
