In recent years, the global economy develops rapidly. At the same time, with the rapid development of China’s construction industry, a variety of multi-scale steel structure emerges endlessly, among which steel residential and office buildings increase year by year. Steel structures not only should meet the premise of the safety, but also meet the goal of affordable, especially the superior mechanical properties under axial compression, earthquake or other forces. It’s increasingly urgent demands to solve these problems, which cannot be avoided.For multi-storey steel residential, three steel lattice columns decorated with pieces are made in this test and comprehensive quantitative analysis of the mechanical properties are taken out such as stiffness, stren gth, ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Three different structural form of the lattice columns are applied load by load-displacement control method. That is to say, with the constant axial pressure applied, the horizontal load is applied to the columns, which is called load control. The steel lattice columns are applied repeated load that progressively increase by 20% of yield load according to the yield load obtained by finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The load applied by displacement control until the members are fully destroyed after the steel lattice column yield. In this test axial pressure, horizontal load and top displacement can be obtained through displacement meter, strain gauge and data collection instrument. The data is collected by computer data acquisition system, while two trials are needed to observer and record the test phenomena(eg. slip, partial surrender, weld cracking, etc.)The nonlinear analysis of the steel lattice columns is taken out by ABAQUS. The mechanical parameters of the material(constitutive relation), plastic damage factor, ductile metal damage, elastomeric injury should be considered in modeling process. And then performance parameters such as the ductility factor, stiffness degradation factor, hysteresis curves, and skeleton curve can be obtained. The result is in good agreement compared with experimental data. Meanwhile, study of the characteristics and types of envelop structure is taken out in this paper, and summarize the materials commonly used recently.This project involves the contents of finite element, structure mechanics, materials statistical disciplines, numerical analysis and other disciplines. Meanwhile the study on energy mechanism of the steel lattice columns under low level cyclic loading is taken out. Research on the mechanical properties such as energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation and ultimate bearing capacity is taken out compared with result of the numerical analysis through ABAQUS. The research ideas and methods have ref erence and theoretical value for the research on mechanical properties of other steel material or similar material.
