China is a large groundwater use country, many cities use groundwater as main water sources, but groundwater manganese concentration generally exceed the regulated standard. The excessive manganese ions will bring much trouble or even harm to people’s life and production. With more and more international attention to those phenomenon, a lot of manganese removal method has appeared, such as oxidation method, strength oxidation method, contact oxidation method, biological method and adsorption method. Recently, strength oxidation method on manganese removal has been generally used in many European cities with its advantage of efficient, fast and thorough.Manganese sand had been widely used in the production practice of our country as a kind of contact catalyst, it usually used together with aeration. However, the iron removal efficiency of this method is better than manganese’s, so multistage process is prerequisite if we want to achieve the depth removal of manganese, which will increase the operation process, investment and construction. This experiment use manganese sand as catalyst and adding strong oxidizer to study the manganese removal efficiency of drinking water.Firstly, the manganese sand and strong oxidizer filtration process was applied, the study use potassium permanganate(KMnO4) and sodium hypochlorite(NaClO) as oxidizer, trying to determine the optimal amount of the oxidizers. The results show that the optimal addition of KMnO4 is higher than theoretical addition, when the addition ratio is between 3.6-4.2, the removal efficiency of manganese reaches 98%; when using NaClO as the oxidizer, if the addition ratio is 1.85, the manganese concentration is up to the standard, when the addition ratio is more than 2.05, the removal effect is steady and the removal ratio exceed 98.5%.Ferric oxyhydroxides(FeOOH), which is a kind of strong adsorbent had been used to remove heavy metals and organics in water treatment field. The paper use a advanced ferric oxyhydroxides composites as catalyst to study the manganese removal efficiency of strength oxidation method. The results show that after coated FeOOH on the zeolite and activated carbon, the manganese removal effect of the carrier can increase significantly. If using zeolite/ferric hydroxide composite as catalyst, only a small amount of oxidizer can make water manganese concentration become a trace; when using activated carbon/ferric hydroxide composite as catalyst, the removal effect is not as good as using zeolite as carrier, but if we add some NaCIO, the water manganese concentration could still reach the standard.
