In China, the fact that the transport capacity cannot meet the traffic volume needs is one of the long-term problems in railway transportation. However, moving block technology can significantly shorten the headways between trains based on its creation of dynamic and virtual blocking sections, which is beneficial for improving railway transport capacity. Generally, the realization of moving block requires massive real-time operation information of the trains as data support, and this involve the implementation of information acquisition and transmission. As a product of independent development and control of China, the Beidou satellite navigation system (BDS) with the ability of velocity measurement, navigation, localization, bidirectional short-message communication and so forth, possesses the technical requirements of building the moving block system (MBS). Therefore, the author addresses the adoption of BDS technology to establish the MBS, and the conceptual architecture of the train operation and dispatching system under the MBS.Firstly, the author analyzes the MBS’s macrostructure and the application functions of each hierarchical structure, and summarizes the characteristics of the MBS. Meanwhile, an overview of the BDS composition is presented and the functional characteristics of the BDS’s vehicle terminal and dispatching terminal are emphatically elaborated. Based on the major characteristics of the BDS, the application requirements of the BDS in railway transportation are analyzed, which include the requirements of the train operation control and the optimization of railway transportation scheduling.Secondly, the author designs the hardware and software structure of each logic control layer with the data acquisition, transmission and application as the principal line. Then, based on the BDS’s dispatching terminal, the networking schemes adapted to a small-scale station and large-scale station are proposed respectively. In addition, the author analyzes the contents and processes of the data interactions among the main application modules in the MBS.Thirdly, the solutions related to three different key technologies including the train self-localization, wireless communication and train integrity detection in MBS are proposed respectively, which are the electronic rail map assisted multi-sensor (BDS’s vehicle terminal, accelerometer and gyroscope) integrated positioning method, the GSM-R and BDS communication combined multi-source wireless communication system and the combined train integrity detection method based on BDS.Finally, from the perspective of improving the robustness, the author proposes the instantaneity and controllability of the dispatching command, an integration concept of the train dispatching command and train operation control under MBS on condition that the established MBS via BDS could provide massive and continuous train operation data. Furthermore, the application requirements, function module and function logic of the functional subsystems are analyzed, including the real-time train operation adjustment system, train operation safety monitoring system and train operation safety active control system.
