Yangtze River had always been a natural moat until the construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, which ended the history of dependent on ferry in Nanjing section of Beijing-Shanghai Line, and also made Chairman Mao’s ’Natural Moat turns into thoroughfare’become possible.Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge symbolizes the achievement of New China. It was of even of equal value to Tian’anmen square, no matter in terms of function or significance. In the last few years, however, the bridge has been overloaded by the heavy traffic, and the shortage of clear height of the bridge has blocked the river to some degree. Various problems occur and raise debate on the bridge.Though scholars had studies and researches on the bridge, they often discussed the significance of the bridge and neglect the study of the bridge itself. I try to study and expand the two themes of ’the development of bridge as architecture’and’how the bridge integrate into and connect with the city. The article will start with Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, restore the design and construction procedures back into the context,then analyze the relationship between bridge and city, and finally initiate the thinking of who city updates. I will depend on document literature,and base on personal experience, to cohere the story of bridge in the perspective of both time and space, try to reveal the inner complicity to public.The first chapter is Introduction, which introduces the origin source of the subject, the aim and meaning of the research, research methods, and the main structure and content of the article.The second chapter studies the development of form of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. In which the first section introduces the origin of the construction of the bridge meanwhile discusses the necessity from the aspects of function and significance. The second section restores the design procedure of bridge, including bridge design, bridge tower design, and landscape design,etc, the third section restores the construction procedure of bridge. The third chapter introduces the social history of the bridge since completed. The fist section of this chapter introduces the service condition of the bridge in the context of Nanjing city, including traffic usage, the influence to Yangtze River waterway and the maintenance of the bridge. The second section discusses the change of status of the bridge in city planning. The third section analyzes the relationship between the bridge and city from various aspects, including traffic, function, and space,it also provides some foreign successful cases of waterfront renovation projects as conferences to the future renovation of the bridge. The fourth chapter discusses the prospective of the bridge. The fifth chapter is conclusion, which summarizes the research work and points out the deficiencies of this article.
