Traditional automobile engine assembly training consumed a lot of financial and material resources. Although the problem existing in the traditional automobile engine assembly training can be solved by virtual automobile engine assembly system, the users are completely divorced from the real scene which make them lose the sense of realistic scene and reduce the assembly process of immersed sense. In order to compensate for the problems mentioned above, the simulation and training of the automobile engine assembly process in the augmented reality(AR) environment was achieved. For the interactive requirement in AR environment, a gesture interaction model based on Kinect was proposed. Compared with the traditional method with mouse and keyboard interaction, the interaction was regarded the user as a part of interaction carrier and allowed the user experience to be greatly improved. Concrete content had been divided into four parts:Firstly, the structure of automobile engine was analyzed and its 3D modeling was carried out. Different vehicle engine had different parts, a wide variety and a huge amount of parts. But the core of the assembly parts was mainly composed of crank link mechanism, gas valve, fuel supply system, ignition system, starting system, cooling system and lubrication system. According to the results of the analysis, geometric modeling and optimization of the important parts of the whole engine were carried out, and the structure of the 3D model was analyzed and defined. Finally, according to the actual assembly process and the characteristics of the system, the assembly process was divided into a specific disassembly process.Secondly, the interaction model was designed. According to the interaction characteristics of automobile engine augmented assembly and the system functional requirements analysis, combined with the advantages of Kinect depth somatosensory equipment, designed a set of interactive gestures based on Kinect tracking human skeleton. In order to add virtual components to the augmented reality environment, the virtual panel of the model base was designed. In addition, in order to make the interaction between the user and the virtual model more natural and intuitive, in the augmented reality, the virtual hand was designed to replace the real hand to interact with virtual objects. At last, the realization flow and its function of each gesture were introduced in detail.Thirdly, the specific implementation of the interactive model was carried out. The motion mapping of real hand and virtual hand was analyzed, and the ray selection of virtual model was realized. The realization of gesture recognition was the most important in the interaction model. At first, we got the depth image of human body through Kinect and extracted human bone information from it. Then, according to the change of the spatial position of the skeleton node, the gesture was defined, and the recognition of the assembly gesture was realized finally.Lastly, a complete augmented reality environment for automobile engine assembly training system was constructed, and the composition of hardware platform and software platform was analyzed. Finally, the feasibility and validity of the proposed method was verified by the running examples.
