Fierce competitive market and continuous technical progress push the price of products going down. The vacuum circuit breaker which produced by X company, facing with price reduction requirement from market, at the same time, it also facing with price increasing for raw material. How to cut down the cost at the same quality level is the urgent thing for X company. Value Engineering is cost and function analysis scientific method, it would be the effective way for X company to solve the problem of high cost. This article begin with simple introduction for origin and development of Value Engineering, then explain the basic theory, work procedure, object selection and function analysis of VE. Following with brief introduction of breaker, such as the structure, classification and technical parameters. Due to too many parts and components, if we analysis all of them, it will cost too much time and bring heavy workload. The breaker is modular designed, so the ABC method has been used to select pole assembly as VE research object. Because it has very little parts but cost very high. The function system drawing has been finished by function analysis and sorting. Cost coefficient for each part of pole assembly was worked out, the function coefficient was calculated by different ratio rating method, based on the two parameters, the value coefficient can be get. The parts with low value coefficient have been chose for design optimizing, these components are contact fingers, insulating rod and heat sink. Different design optimization plans have been used on the three components, and verified the plans by related test. These design optimization plans bring big cost saving for X company.
