Along with fracture failure, the weak seismic resistant behavior of the compositestaggered truss framing system greatly restricted the application range of this system.This system is only recommended for area where the seismic fortification intensity isnot more than eight degree. In this way, it is urgent to improve the seismic performanceof this system to expend its application.When subjected to horizontal load, the middle vierendeel panels of the thecomposite staggered truss framing are damended to bear large bending moment andshearing force. The energy dissipation capacity of members with shear yielding andbending yield is greater than those bearing tension and compression. To improve itsseismic performance, the concept of special staggered truss framing system was putforward here referred to the practice of eccentrically braced steel frame, which was todesign the middle vierendeel panel of the staggered truss structure framing as specialsegment. When the structure was withstood severe earthquake action, the yieldingspecial segment took part in the inelastic energy dissipation with the rest membersremained elastic forming multiple structure system.The derivation of plastic design for special staggered truss based on energybalance was conducted according to the performance-based plastic design (PBPD) ofGOEL: the energy equilibrium equation was deduced based on the selected globalfailure mode and then the plastic design was conducted for the special segment. Thedesign for other members of the system was conducted by the solvent of the reaction ofspecial segments to ensure those members keep elastic during the severe earthquakes.Fristly, a12-layer conventional staggered truss specimen was designed based onthe elastic design method and then a special staggered truss was designed as based on the plastic design accounting of energy balance. The example analysis results showthat the expectations could be achieved by the plastic design method of specialstaggered truss based on energy balance. The development of the target yieldingmechanism could be guaranteed. Almost all of the members participate in the energydissipation which are designed as special segment in the the special staggered trussseismic avoiding the centralized local damage. Meanwhile it was kept elastic for thosethe members outside the special staggered. The structure story displacement tended tobe more uniform, and the maximal interlaminar displacement angle met the demands.The results show the seismic resistant behavior of staggered truss framing system hadbeen improved greatly which was designed by the plastic besign of special staggeredtruss based on energy balance. The selected global failure mode the framing wasdeveloped at the same time.
