VNT (variable nozzle turbine) is one of the most critical parts to improve engineperformance and to achieve the purpose of energy saving and emission reducing. Withthe increase in car sales and in environment protection concerning, the market demandof VNT increases sharply. Many research institutions and companies have increasedthe investment in the development this product. With the background of fiercecompetition, customer has higher requirement on product delivery lead time,especially complaining on the quality of product.Six sigma is a kind of quality management method which many company areinterested in. It mainly has two modes: improvement mode and design mode. It canhelp enterprise reduce disadvantages in product design, minimizing the risk, improvethe design efficiency, then maximizing company profit by applying six sigma method.Base on studying six sigma theories, the paper introduce six sigma qualitymanagement methodologies into product design, which can avoid carry out ideairrespective of external circumstances during product design phase. Consideringcompany characteristics, the paper implement six sigma methodology feasibilitystudies, provide theoretical support and strategy decision on six sigma designapplication. Furthermore, taking instance of nozzle ring welding tooling design, thispaper explains each phases of six sigma product design application and how to use sixsigma tooling, succeed in constructed basic six sigma product design methodology.This paper focuses on both theory and practice combination. According toprototype test result, it proves that six sigma can successfully be applied into productdesign. It also indicates that it can improve success rate, product quality, reduce leadtime and reduce total cost by applying six sigma ideas into product design.
