Under the background of rapid urbanization, the land lack andpopulation pressure, as well as the sea level rising and climateenvironment disaster caused by global warming, the paper regardswater area as a new kind of rich, sustainable and prospective humansettlement space, and provides a new alternative strategy, aquatecture,to adapt to the changing environment, which will contribute to savingland resources, releasing the population pressure and maintaining theecosystem. As the study of aquatecture is not systematic and professional inChina, the paper tries to elaborate the definition to aquatecture. Vialiterature collation and case study, it demonstrates the historicalevolution, relevant researchers and systematic classification,. Based onthe principles of architectural and ship design, the paper has alsosystematically presents the general principles of aquatecural design andthe concrete implementation strategy. The details are as follows:The first chapter is an introduction of research background. Due tothe environmental issues, it clarifies the contents, purpose, definitionand significance of the study of the aquatecture.Chapter2is the study of the auqtecture development. It iscomposed of two dimensions: one is vertical analysis(i.e., evolutionprocess), and the other is regional analysis (i.e., the relevant researchersand their cases).Chapter3focuses on the composition and the classification ofaquatecture. it puts forward the design principle of the aquatecture viamulti-disciplinary research.Chapter4mainly discusses the process and key points of aquatectural design, such as site selection and layout, the constructionof the foundation and the upper structure, and strategies of energysaving.Chapter5presents typical cases of aquatecture with differentstyles and functions to illustrate the design principle and strategy. The last chapter indicates the difficulties of the aquatecturedevelopment and its prospect for the future in China. This research tries to build up the theoretical system of theaquatecture and to set up a foundation for the further research ofbuilding, living on the water.
