Compared with steel, concrete and stone, wood is the most readily availablerenewable resources. It is wisedly used in the traditional ancient and modernarchitecture buildings. Because of the defects, corrosion, earthquake damage and so on,the strength of wood would be waken. So the timber structures need to be reinforced.Although there are many traditional strengthening methods, deficiencies also exist inthem. Against this background, this paper put forward a new method: steel belt reinforcewood column.To begin with, a experimental study on one unreinforced wood column and sixsteel belt reinforced woodd columns were made. By observing the destructivecharactere of strengthened wood columns and analysing the change of the capacity ofbearing load and stiffness, the result show that the effect of steel belt reinforced woodenpillars is not obvious. Thus, a new strengthing method was put forward: timber columnstrengthened with steel tube.Next, test about two unreinforced columns and six timber columns strengthenedwith steel tube were done. In this paper, experimental parameter is the thicknesses ofsteel tube.The destructive form of timber columns strengthened with steel tube wereobserved, and the change of capacity of bearing load and stiffness was analyzed, and theemerging method of timber column strengthened with FRP were compared with it. Theresults showd that timber column strengthened with steel tube was able to overcome thebad influence about natural defects (crack, knag) for its strength. At the same time, thismethod also could improve the charactere of damage and greatly enhance the capacityof bearing load and stiffness. So steel tube reinforce timber column was a good strengthing method.Finally, the theoretical equation and simplified formula about the bearing capacityof timber column strengthened with steel tube was deduced on the basis of thecomputational methods about concrete filled steel tube columns and timber columnlaterally strengthened with FRP. The theoretical equation had scientific researchsignificance and the simplified calculated result are in good agreement with experimentresults and more suitable for engineering application.
