With the rapid development of automotive technology and continuous improvement of theroad, vehicle speed are generally increased, people have increasingly higher demands onvehicle safety. Especially for the medium and heavy trucks driving on the mountain or ramproad frequently, the problem of too much braking load becomes more and more prominent andserious, if all these braking load was borne by the common braking system of the vehicle, it willcause that friction plates become very hot, and then thermal fade phenomenon will happen,these will seriously affect vehicle safety. Retarder, which is installed on the vehicle, is a type ofvehicle auxiliary braking device. It can not only reduce the frequency of using common brakingsystem extend the lifespan of common braking system, but also enhance the vehicle’s brakingperformance and security.At the beginning of this paper, the development status of retarders at home and aboard areanalyzed, finding a phenomenon that the installation rate of retarders on tractors and trailers isunbalanced. By analyzing the feature of trailer and its braking system, the significance ofresearch on retarders installed on trailers was proposed. By analyzing the Domestic and foreignregulations specified to the retarders and comparing the braking performance of five differenttype of retarders, the basic design demand of the wheel-side retarders on trailer and suitableretarder type-hydraulic retarder were identified.Making feasibility analysis of retarders arranging on the wheel-side of trailers forcertain car models, three design suggestions of hydraulic retarder and control method ofretarder system were proposed. By comparing three design suggestions, the high spaceutilization one was determined as the final one to carry out the structure design of the retarderbody. The planetary gear mechanism, main axle and vane wheels were the main subject of thestructure design. The design and checking of planetary gear mechanism and main axle werebased on the experimental mechanical design formulas.The method of combing theory andsimulation was used when designing vane wheels. Each parameter was determinedprogressively and the three-dimensional retarder model was given at last.Finite element analysis of products have become an important process during theproduct design cycle, calculations and analysis for the design parameters and performanceanalysis are able to reduce product development cycle and optimize product performance. Afterthe initial design, flow field simulation analysis was made and heat load was calculated by the flow channel model in order to test and verify the three-dimensional turbulence motion of thefluid and propose improvements for the design. The analysis results were of great guide for thefurther improvement design of retarder.
