The global energy and environment crisis motivates people to develop renewableenergy which is clean and environmental friendly. Solar energy, as a part of the renewableenergy, is becoming more and more widely used since its abundance and wide spreading. However, a large scale of grid-connected photovoltaic may result in frequency deviation. As a part of electricity market, the automatic generation control (AGC) is occupied infrequency adjustment and power control. Load frequency control, as the central part ofAGC, will influence the performance of AGC. Thus there is a large number of researchabout LFC so far.In this paper, the theory of frequency adjustment and AGC are first introduced briefly. And the principle of load frequency control is presented including the modeling of LFC, theselection of control mode and the determination of frequency bias coefficient. Then thestructure of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and the pratical application oflinear ADRC are both presented. Furthermore, this control method is applied in the twointerconnected electrical systems. The design of this controller is introduced in detail.Based on the study of theory, the simulation model is established in Matlab/Simulink inorder to compare the ADRC with PI in this system from4aspects. The simulation resultsprove that the performance of LFC is effectively improved by usingADRC.In the next part the modeling and working characteristics of photovoltaic array arepresented first. The photovoltaic array is participating in the frequency adjustment of twointerconnected areas using3different control strategies. The simulation model is built inMatlab/Simulink and the simulation results with different photovoltaic power controlstrategies are compared to show how the photovoltaic power control strategy influences thesystem frequency adjustment.
